he passed away on 4^th Aug 2003 at 9 1/2 yrs

(still missing you after all these years…..)

King of the Saltees on his Throne

He was a typical example of an Irish Goathound - see his own story below.

• The REAL "Salty Dog" used to join most trips to help dispose of scraps and offer his special TLC services for those suffering from "mal de mer". A real character, he loved to be involved in sailing the boat, keeping crew warm, visiting neighbouring boats, downing a pint or two (milk or water!!) and catching up on old pals - canine and human in many of the ports/clubs we visited. He came to me from the WSPCA pound at Sharpeshill, Glenealy, Co Wicklow in 1995 and immediately took to life afloat, with many exciting adventures and escapades along the way. Irish Goathounds are renowned for their gentle nature, loyalty, vigilance, guarding their patch, herding of mountain goats (Wicklow is famous as the "County of Goatsuckers") and canine cuteness. Pepper was a classic example of the Breed. Informed opinion tells me that he was also very similar to a Petit Bassett de Fontaine (not that posh was his style!!). What a pity he was the one and only Irish Goathound to ever exist!

when me wuz yung, me had a bad time an' me ran away from me furst master. A nice human brung me to sharps hill up in de montains where dis big fella, who seemed ok for a human, came and took me to sea his yella boat. Dat wuz a long time ago and we still go away sumtimes in his white boat - funny ting is, he calls it saltie dog - but it don't smell like no dog to me. Other humans call dis big fella charlie - he's just master to me - and boy, does he shout sumtimes. Us oirish goathounds has very sensitive hearing ya no.

Us dogs has a hard time - always being told do dis or do dat, me just like to play with little yellow balls, smell other dog bums or me best - sleep all day- Now dats me dog heaven. Me got help from me other pal scratcher mac flay who had a human daddy, so he can translate dog talk into human talk - he sure looks funny with a dogs head an tale but human arms 'n legs.

Me had a few strange times as me an de master brung all dese other humans away in de yella boat an de dog boat - scratcher says me should let you no about sum o dem stories.

One time, long time ago - 35 dog yeers ago when me wuz still a bit puppeeish, de master tide me up outside dis ol smelly castle in carnarvan - me swore me smelt corgi dog pee dere (scratcher says some queen human owns sum corgis). Me was just enjoyin a nice sleep when this nice little girl human with a shaky man came along an brung me for a walk - we wuz not goin to de boat, coz we wuz goin up a hill. Dis stange man kept walkin funny an nearly walked on me a few times - he smelt like de master after he spends a long time drinkin dat black stuff. De master jumped outta sum car and wuz shoutin like mad at dis shaky man. We den went into dis house where de humans wuz all in blue with strange hats and me heard de master talk about dog nappin - more like nappin interupted. Me saw him give de little girl sum paper money and we went off to de yella boat again to meet de other humans - master wuz very nice to me dat day.

This 1^st episode of his adventures is dedicated to my Dad, Simon J. Kavanagh, who sadly passed away on 8^th January 2003, one of his greatest fans. Pepper, who shared the same birthday with Daddy, passed away in the same year also. R.I.P. to them both - they are mates up yonder.

• Toesun came on board in October 2003 (from Sharpeshill also) and has a big job on his paws to follow the Legendary Pepper. He is a lovable character, with a gentle nature – he has settled in well and is a cuddly crew mate.
