TOESUN settles in

As you can see above (40 winks with a difference!), Toesun is making himself very much at home after a slow start. He is turning out to be a wonderfully placid and easy going crew member, totally at ease with crew and all the activity going on around him. Its a dogs life!

SUMMER SCHEDULE

From the schedule overleaf, you will see we have a comprehensive choice of courses available between now and the end of September. Weekends tend to book up very fast, so if the shorter trip suits, don't delay. Also, if your holiday time is limited and a particular week appeals, don't leave it too late to let us know of your interest. First come and all that!! Make a provisional booking to give yourself time to decide. Click on Schedule above.

Croatia is almost full - 2 places only left on week one (4/11 Sep) - flights are starting to get expensive, so the fee is now min. €1200 to allow for the flight price hike (now c.€400). Suitable for beginners and very scenic.

Cruise Alert - Our 5 day trip - Aug 22/27 (D.7) - is now just a cruising trip, with minimal tuition. Don't expect to achieve a Certificate, just enjoy a good old fashioned exploration by sail boat around the Irish Sea. The cost reflects this - €400 per person (normal discounts apply also). Sign up early, don't miss out.

.NEWSFLASH!

We are now a Recognised Test Centre (Sail and Power) for the Irish Sailing Associations newest Certificate - the I.C.C. (International Certificate of Competence). This is the usual minimum requirement for Chartering in the Mediterranean area and Caribbean.

There are a number of ways to get the Cert.:-

1. If you already hold an ISA Day Skipper Practical Cert. (or higher), apply directly to the ISA for a conversion Cert.

2. If you attend a 5 day (or 3 w/e) Practical Day Skipper** (or higher) course with us, on successful completion you can convert your new Cert. to an I.C.C. through the ISA.

3. If you have reasonable recent boating experience with a Navigation Theory Cert, do a 1 day Assessment with us.

4. If you have some boating experience but no navigational background, do a 2 day assessment with us.

**(Recommended option for those with limited boating and navigation experience)

Contact us today if you are planning a Charter Holiday in the near future. Avoid having to hire a skipper (c.€100pd).

MERRY BEE (Achilles 9m ('74))

Merry Bee is now back after a 4 year lay off. She is available to former students who have a reasonable standard of boat handling and sailing experience who might wish to charter her for doing exams (Coastal or Offshore). There is no liferaft aboard, so you would need to borrow or hire one for the exam. Also, she can be chartered on a friendly basis for short periods on the same basis. Charter costs are E100 pd (reducing by 20% for each subsequent day, with a security deposit of E250 payable up front.

Also, she is for sale. She is an Achilles 9m ('74), with new mast, boom, rigging, mainsail (all '03), reconditioned Yanmar 10HP 1 cylinder engine ('02), 6 sails, GPS, Log, Depth sounder, VHF, Radio/tape player, nav lights, cooker, sea toilet and much more. She has accommodation in 2 cabinns for 5, good stowage and is a very safe seaworthy boat.

RYA SRC Fiasco

Some of you will be aware that the bureaucrats in our Dept of Marine have decided to no longer recognise the above Certs (post June 1st 2004). If you have a Cert. which is dated prior to the above date, you can still apply for an Irish Ships license for your vessel.

The ISA and other agencies are trying to knock sense into the Dept. but it will be a while before any good comes of this mad aberration by our geniuses in the Dept. Watch this space!

RISSO Dolphins are back around Wicklow

We have had regular sightings over the last 4/5 weeks of several different pods of Rissos Dolphins along the Wicklow/Wexford coastlines. These are the largest species of dolphin and tend to be shy around boats - they don't bow ride like their Common or Bottlenose cousins. We regularly spot Porpoise on most coasts.

There is also a lot of Whale activity off the Irish coast this year, with reported sightings of Fin, Minke and Pilot Whales. You'd never know your luck, you could spot one of these species on one of our trips.

BMW Round Ireland 2004

....................

Miinie the Moocher and O2 Spirit...................................................RI Race Start at Wicklow 26/6/04

This proved to be a very rewarding Round Ireland for several South East Cruising School students. Tackling this daunting 704 mile challenge from Wicklow Harbour and getting back again is no mean achievement. 47 (of 50 entries) started at 1800 on Sat 26th June and 11 of these boats retired for one reason or another. The fleet encountered very strong winds all the way around, frequently enduring gales and stronger.

The winning boat was "Calyx Voice and Data" (Voodoo Chile - a 32' one off, built in Bray) and on board was Alan Crosbie, a former navigation student of mine. Congrats Alan and crew on a fabulous performance. Some of my practical students who got around were Bryan Dobson - RTE (State of Chassis), Ivan Alcorn and Ansis Dimiters (Celtic Spirit) and theory students Leo McKern and Joe O Byrne. For all those who partook and especially those who managed to stay the pace, well done. If I missed any students, please let me know. The Yacht we delivered from Cork to Wicklow and back again, Endeavour (Beneteau 36.7) came 3rd in class and 9th overall - well done Conor and Denise Phelan and crew.
