GREENCOASTS CHARTER '05

Our now annual pilgrimage to the Canary sunshine in January (1st to 8th)
was an enjoyable experience. We were based in Pta Mogan, Gran Canaria and had 6
customers on 2 Cruising Yachts. We visited La Gomera, Tenerife (briefly) and
back to G. C. sailing c.180 miles in some very testing conditions. Everybody
agreed the passage back into a stiff headwind to Gran Canaria, with heavy seas
and gear problems was the sailing highlight. We made a run for it due to our
house batteries not charging, with the result that we only had enough power for
essentials - no fridge, windlass, radar or navigation instruments. It turned
out to be a small broken wire on the alternator and all was sorted in jig time.
Other legs were placid by comparison, but all had their rewards. We managed to
sight Machholz's Comet on 2 or 3 nights as it
passed close to Orion, in the
Also, we had fabulous sightings of Pilot whales, dolphins (click to
see 2mb video clip) and a swimming turtle. Ashore we enjoyed some memorable
meals and more than one boozy session!

School boats
Thanks to the strong winds just before Christmas, Saltee Dog had
the misfortune to escape from her cradle and lean over on 3 other boats in
Wicklow Sailing Club. Fortunately, only minimal damage occurred and no-one was
hurt. The crane couldnt get to her until after Christmas. She is now upright
again and very securely chocked.
Merry Bee has a deposit paid on her and subject to a
successful survey, hopefully will be on her way by the end of March. I got her
and Pepper (RIP) the same week in March 1995 and she was a good servant to SOUTH EAST
CRUISING SCHOOL. She will mark the end of two eras for me, when she
finally goes.
