IRISH SAILING ASSOCIATION THEORY COURSES

Theory courses offered

(venues usually Newpark ADE, Blackrock, Co Dublin - (01 2883725) and Wicklow Sailing Club (as SECS))

· Introduction to Navigation - a 10 week night course, suitable for beginners or those with limited cruising experience. The course is designed to give you a good basic grasp of Nautical terminology, Chartwork, Tides, Safety, Rules of the Road, Ropework and Knots and other related issues. On successful completion of the course you will be awarded a Certificate by South East Cruising School. (Sometimes we can travel - if you have a group and suitable venue, contact me).

· Yachtmaster Coastal - a 20 week night course (usually starts late Sep/early Oct) for candidates with reasonable boating experience - preferably with hands on navigation experience. This intermediate course is designed to give budding skippers/navigators a solid grasp of Navigation Theory - concentrating on Navigation - traditional and electronic, Tides, Rules of the Road, Meteorology, Safety Issues, Skippering, Pilotage and Passage Planning. On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded the ISA Yachtmaster Coastal Theory Certificate.

· Follow on course to Intro to Nav. Starts

· Yachtmaster Offshore - a 20 week night course (usually starts late Sep/early Oct) for candidates with a good level of navigation experience, and preferably with some skippering background also. This course is designed to equip successful candidates with a high level of navigational theory covering all aspects of the ISA Yachtmaster syllabus. Ideal theory preparation for anyone hoping to do the Yachtmaster Offshore Practical exam. On successful completion of this course, you will awarded the ISA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory Certificate.

(South East Cruising School is a Royal Yachting Association Centre for Short Range Certificate Courses and Assessments)

· Diesel Engine Maintenance Course - this 1 day course is aimed a Boat Owners who wish to know the basics of Diesel Engine maintenance to help prolong the life of their engine and troubleshoot problems - ie fuel line, oil changes, cooling systems, alternators etc. The course will be given by Hugh Pilsworth, an RYA Diesel Instructor, who is the Irish agent for Yanmar Marine engines.
