Charlie Kavanagh did the
Dublin City Marathon Walk
(Mon 29th Oct 2007)
for the
Saracura Project
(Vento em Popa) in Portugeuse only
Sao Paulo, Brazil
I walked the 26 miles 385 yards Dublin City Marathon in aid of Saracura / Vento em Popa, a project working with deprived favela (slum) kids from some of Sao Paulos many shanty towns (c.65% of 23m++ population) and I hope to collect adequate funds in support of this project.
6hours 38 mins 32 secs - I finished it in 8028th position (of c.11,000 starters)
Fundraising Events Planned:- Brazil Jersey signed by Kaka and Ronaldo on e-bay, Sponsor Cards, and more.....check link for more details
16th May 2008 - Funds raised €3360
The project aims to help develop life skills - such as education, craft work, wood work, environmental awareness and not least sailing/social skills - in youngsters who only see a depressing cycle of drugs, violence, prostitution etc all around them 24/7.
Based on one of Sao Paulos reservoirs, hugely contaminated by toxic waste, general pollution and raw human sewage amongst others, the leaders work with the kids in the classroom, workshop and on the water teaching them ways they can contribute to lessening the impact of these pollutants, building an awareness of their local environment, developing coping skills by building their own boats and jetties and generally equipping them to break the horrible depressing cycle they were born into. see link for more info
Having met some of these wonderful bright kids while travelling along the Brazillian coast earlier this year, I made a promise that I would try to help them in their project.
If you feel you would like to assist by donating, organising a fundraiser or helping in any practical way, please let me know - 087 2394379 / sailsoutheast@eircom.net
Obrigado (thanks),
Charlie
